Frequently Asked Questions

How do I determine the right BTU size?

Use our MRCOOL DIY® sizing tool to get a recommendation based on room size, insulation level, and how the space is used. The Coverage Area cards above show the maximum square footage for each size.

Can I really install a MRCOOL DIY® system myself?

Yes. MRCOOL DIY® systems are designed for homeowner installation. The pre-charged Quick Connect® line set means no vacuum pump, refrigerant charging, or specialized HVAC tools. The one step to plan for is the electrical supply — see the electrical question below.

What electrical work is required, and do I need a permit?

Mini splits typically need a dedicated circuit with a breaker and disconnect sized for the system’s voltage (see Voltage under Quick Facts). Requirements for wiring a new circuit and for permits or inspections vary by city and county. Many homeowners hire a licensed electrician for the electrical hookup even though the rest of the installation is DIY. Review the installation manual and confirm local requirements before you order.

Do I need an HVAC technician?

A licensed HVAC technician is not required for the refrigerant side — the pre-charged Quick Connect® line set is designed to be connected without vacuuming or charging. Electrical work and permits are governed by your local code, so check what applies to you (see below).

What is included, and what do I need to buy separately?

The system includes the indoor air handler, outdoor condenser, pre-charged Quick Connect® line set, DIYPRO® armored cable, wireless remote, and installation documentation. Items such as a wall bracket or pad for the outdoor unit, the breaker and disconnect, and power wiring from your panel are typically purchased separately. Wall brackets and line set covers are in our accessories collection.

How long does installation take?

Many homeowners complete installation in a single day, depending on the installation location, line set routing, and electrical requirements.

Does the system provide both heating and cooling?

Yes. MRCOOL DIY® systems are heat pumps that provide both heating and cooling for year-round comfort.

Can I control the system from my phone?

Yes. MRCOOL DIY® systems support SmartHVAC app control and select voice assistant integrations.
